Okay: A short McShep drabble wherein Rodney can't sleep and it's all John's fault. Written on my phone while I'm supposed to be sleeping. ~400 Words

It starts as an uncomfortable ache in the pit of his stomach; a gnawing, unrelenting feeling that won't go away, no matter how much he tosses this way or turns that way.

Rodney rolls onto his back, eyes wide open as he stares out at one of New Lantea's round, pale moons.

It casts a gentle glow into the room, bouncing off of the smooth, bare skin of John's back as he sleeps on. Rodney reaches out tentatively and traces the long, lean lines of John's body.

"Mmm... Ro'ney?"

Rodney pauses. "Go back to sleep, Sheppard," he says.

John turns his head and blinks owlishly. "Can't sleep again, buddy?"

"Your powers of deduction astound me," Rodney says dryly.

With a quiet sigh, John heaves himself over into his back and tugs Rodney down against his chest. Rodney stiffens, poised and ready to pull away when John slides a warm hand under his t-shirt and strokes his back gently.

"S'okay," John says, but Rodney knows its not. "Hey Rodney, it's okay."

Rodney goes pliant against him, pressing himself to John's side and breathes him in, memorizing the scent.

"You're so stupid," Rodney mumbles, muffled by John's shoulder. "Jesus, you're so stupid," he says because they almost lost John again today on a half cocked suicide mission, all because Rodney wasn't quick enough, or smart enough, or...

"Rodney," John says, hand snaking around to rest recent on his hip, squeezing gently. Rodney knows its meant as a reminder that he's still here. "It's okay."

"But it almost wasn't," Rodney says.

"Yeah," John responds.

They fall silent.

Rodney can feel the gentle thunk, thunk, thunk of John's heart beating under his ear. He closes his eyes and presses closer and waits for John's crack about snuggling scientists, but it never comes.

Instead, John's grip tightens as he tries to convince Rodney with his touch that he's still here, he's okay and he's not going anywhere.

The knot in the pit of Rodney's belly loosens just a little and his eyes are beginning to grow heavy.

"I'm okay now," Rodney says quietly.
"Okay," John responds.

He doesn't let go.
